PROLOGUE
Offshoot Projects, London
24th May - 9th June 2019
Prologue introduces ten painters presenting histories, fables, processes and gestures, driving personal and collective narratives grounded in the experience of creating and regarding a painted surface.
For the first exhibition in the space, I was commissioned to make a site-specific, temporary painting on the gallery window. Unfold seeks to blur boundaries between photography and painting, where the window as painting support acts as a lens, an aperture into the gallery space beyond and is ultimately a site of transition. The translucent painting creates an active optical response where a viewer’s eyes focus first on the surface marks, the reflection on the glass and then adjust to focus through to the gallery interior. The rolling marks appear to glow when viewed from within the space and during periods of sunlight, shadows are projected, extending secondary gestures across the gallery floor and walls.
