THE SHAPE OF LIGHT

In 2018 artists Zanny Mellor and Jessica Rayner created The Shape of Light, an immersive installation in the crypt at St John Bethnal Green church for our collaborative residency with Lumen.
Drawing upon the existing architecture and atmospherics of the dark, underground space; tracing paper and stage lighting was layered through 4 metres of archways to create a glowing tunnel of light which was reminiscent of an aperture or void.
The installation was a sensually challenging, optical and physical experience. The viewer slowly became accustomed to the darkness, learning to trust their eyesight and bodily navigation, to move around the space and align the composition within their line of sight.
